Become a Gōdō Instructor

BECOME A GŌDŌ INSTRUCTOR

Build your skills
Earn your place
Lead your own Gōdō club

Gōdō Martial Arts is expanding — and we’re looking for committed martial artists who want to take the next step.

You don’t have to already be a black belt.

If you’re an experienced martial artist with the ability, attitude and commitment to become an instructor, Gōdō can provide a structured pathway to help you get there.

YOUR JOURNEY TO INSTRUCTOR

TRAIN

Continue developing your own technical ability through the Gōdō syllabus and training system.

ASSIST

As your skills and experience develop, you may be invited to become a:

Gōdō Fuku-Shidōin
Assistant Instructor Appointment

You’ll begin gaining real teaching experience under the guidance of an experienced Gōdō instructor.

DEVELOP

Learn how to teach — not simply how to perform.

You’ll develop skills in:

  • Lesson planning
  • Technical instruction
  • Pad work and partner training
  • Class management
  • Coaching different abilities
  • Sparring management
  • Communication
  • Student development
  • Safeguarding and professional responsibilities
ASSESS

Your progress will be assessed against Gōdō’s instructor standards.

We look at more than your belt.

We look at your:

Technique. Teaching. Character. Leadership. Responsibility.

QUALIFY

When you’ve reached the required technical standard, you may be awarded:

Gōdō Shodan

Gōdō Shodan is a genuine Dan grade and must be earned through appropriate assessment.

It is not bought, given automatically or awarded simply because you want to teach.

APPOINT

Once you have demonstrated the required technical and instructional competence, you may be appointed to teach independently within Gōdō.

Experienced and appropriately qualified instructors may also be considered for direct recognition and appointment following assessment.

LEAD

The ultimate opportunity is to establish and lead your own:

GŌDŌ BRANCH

You’ll have the opportunity to build your own local club while operating within the Gōdō framework and benefiting from the identity, syllabus and standards of an established martial arts organisation.

ALREADY AN EXPERIENCED MARTIAL ARTIST?

You don’t necessarily need to start again.

If you’ve already achieved a high Kyu grade, Dan grade or significant teaching experience in another martial arts organisation, we can assess your existing skills and experience.

Your previous achievements will be respected.

Gōdō authority, however, is earned through Gōdō assessment.

Depending on your experience, you may enter the pathway at an appropriate stage.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for people who demonstrate:

Technical Ability
You take your martial arts seriously and want to keep improving.

Leadership
People naturally look to you for guidance.

Communication
You can explain, demonstrate and encourage.

Reliability
You do what you say you’ll do.

Character
You understand that an instructor is responsible for more than teaching techniques.

Commitment
You’re interested in building something for the long term.

THIS IS MORE THAN A BELT

Gōdō does not believe that wearing a black belt automatically makes someone an instructor.

A good instructor needs technical ability.

A great instructor also needs the ability to develop other people.

That’s why our pathway is based on:

RANK → APPOINTMENT → AUTHORITY → RESPONSIBILITY

Your rank demonstrates what you have achieved.

Your appointment demonstrates the trust Gōdō places in you.

Your authority defines what you are permitted to do.

Your responsibility is demonstrated by how you use it.

BUILD YOUR OWN FUTURE WITH GŌDŌ

Whether you’re an ambitious Gōdō student, an experienced high-Kyu martial artist or an established instructor looking for a new direction, there may be a place for you within Gōdō.
